11/14/06 - Initial Install
Over the weekend I installed Ubuntu on my IBM Thinkpad T42. Here are some notes about the process. My goal was to install Ubuntu as a new partition on the existing 80 Gb hard drive on my IBM Thinkpad T42. It already had Windows XP Pro installed in an NTFS partition occupying the whole disk. There was somewhat over 30 Gb free space.
The first thing to do was to download an iso image of Ubuntu. The latest version is 6.10, code named Edgy Eft. This is a big download (700 Mb+), so it took a while.
I defragged the hard drive a few times, eventually ending up with everything on the left except some "unmovable files" (MS-speak). I looked on google for issues, but most of the ubuntu messages seemed confused about whether these mattered. Perhaps the issue related to earlier ubuntu versions.
I decided to go ahead and see if the ubuntu installer could handle resizing the NTFS partition.
When I finished burning the ubuntu cd, I booted it in the laptop. After telling it I wanted to shrink the NTFS partition to 65 Gb and to install ubuntu in the remaining 25 Gb, it took over and, some time later, delivered a working ubuntu partition.
Issues seen so far:
- I can mount the NTFS partition as RO, but not RW.
- Perhaps I should have set up a FAT32 partition for a common RW area?
- The built-in WLAN device does not work.
- When attached to the docking station, the docking station monitor looks rather squirrelly (tech term).
- Display is larger than the screen (yet the laptop display looks fine).
- Fonts are jagged and shimmer.
- How to log in to NT network?
