Ollie's Web Site:About
From Ollie's Web Site
Wiki's are a sort of self-generating website, where viewers of the site can also edit or add to the content of the site. While many think this could lead to bedlam, others point to quite-successful collaborative sites entirely supported by user efforts.
These range from a variety of support sites, to a truly massive undertaking, an on-line encyclopedia called WikiPedia. Wikis are a special kind of web site which can be edited or added to by normal users from their web browser. This means you can set up collaborative efforts for businesses or for hobby activities, giving group members the power to craft their own web pages.
Back to the WikiPedia project, which is a user-created encyclopedia, containing entries on just about everything and closely monitored by a dedicated user community. Here, for example, is the entry on wikis, while here is the entry on Jack Russell Terriers. In either case, if you want to correct something or add something to either of the entries, you just click on the "edit" button and type away.
Ollie's MediaWiki Portal is run by the same wiki software as runs the WikiPedia, though obviously on a much smaller scale. To edit a page, click on the "Edit" button on the right for the section you want to edit. The edit window has buttons for common formatting options, while lots of editing details may be found at the MediaWiki site.
The software to implement MediaWiki on a website may be downloaded here.
