Pinnacle Initial Setup
I bought the Pinnacle Studio MovieBox Plus bundle including capture/editing/dvd writing software plus the usb-based capture device yesterday (4/9/07). I then dug out my Sony CCD-TRV22, loaded up an old tape and tried capturing. Here's Pinnacle's home page.
The result was terrible. The video image looked fine on the camcorder, but the image showing in the Pinnacle capture window as terrible: it jumped all over, like the frames were randomly placed on the screen. I've spent some time searching for troubleshooting information.
- I tried one of the latest tapes, to see if the problem was from reading tapes that had been written with a different camcorder. While the later tape seemed clearer, the jumping around problem persisted.

- Pinnacle answer related to jittery capture from VCR.
Problem solved. I reinstalled the drivers, changed to a new set of rca composite cables and moved the usb connection to my hub. I also changed the capture setting to "VCR" which I vaguely recall was necessary to make a VHS tape from the Sony.
Editing & Capture
With the jitters gone, I captured a few minutes of one of my old tapes. Pinnacle can capture in several different quality levels and will save either to one .avi file or break on scenes into many .avi's. After capture, you can then drag scenes onto a timeline, delete portions, add transitions, edit the soundtrack, add dvd-style menus and lots more. Clearly, this is a very complicated venue.
