Clean URLs

After doing a major upgrade of ubuntu, I was no longer able to log into my drupal site. Did major hair-pulling, but finally stumbled on the issue (and cure) here: (all the way at the bottom).

Turns out the upgrade had disabled the apache module, mod_rewrite. Since my drupal site had been set to use clean url's it got confused. Once I manually adjusted the url's in the browser to the "/?q=" format, the pages worked fine. First, I logged in. Then I navigated (using the "?q=" throughout) to the Clean URLs page where I unchecked the Use Clean URLs box and saved. From there on the site worked fine.

Using "a2enmod rewrite" and "service apache2 restart" restored mod_rewrite and I was able to re-enable clean url's in drupal.
